Clear Front Contour Face Mask

This is a face mask covering the nose and mouth, while following the natural convex contour of the face. Most notably, the area at the mouth has a clear panel with rounded edges. Due to the cloth at the nose and the rounded edges of the vinyl panel, fogging incurred by moisture emitted by the nose & mouth is minimalized.

Mask is most effective in controlled temperature environments; not ideal for high activity that will incur sweating/heavy breathing. In case of fogging, it is effective to wipe a light dab of liquid soap/detergent to create a seal on the interior of the clear front.

Reversible Full Cloth Face Mask

Adjustable straps are made by sewing 1/8” cording or ribbon at each corner, overlapping, and single knotting. This allows for sliding adjustment for custom fit & comfort. The contoured top edge allows for little to no fogging on eyeglasses when straps are properly adjusted.

Reversible full cloth masks may be made to accommodate a filter pocket.

Tutorials/Tips

General

  • If you do not have a toggle, adjustable straps can be made by sewing 1/8” cording or ribbon at each corner, overlapping, and single knotting. This allows for sliding adjustment for custom fit & comfort.

  • Snip fabric at curves to release tension for clean folds.

  • Be sure to reinforce straps as necessary.

  • For extra fit, fold aluminum foil and add to the nose bridge with bias/twill tape or ribbon.

  • For extra grip, add silicone to the nose bridge.

  • For increased safety, add additional layers and/or set fabric with a water-repellent treatment.

  • Make small masks for stuffed animals/toys to normalize masks for children and to give children a means to process & learn mask-wearing.

Clear Front Masks

  • Use recyclable PVC for zero-waste scraps!

  • Use a longer stitch length when sewing in the clear insert to prevent tearing.

  • Do NOT iron vinyl directly. However, you can iron with a press cloth covering.

  • Sew center seams, then iron open the seam. In the body and the lining, clip just short of 1/4” around the insert space where it curves, to fold back 1/4” and iron for smooth line. Then insert clear vinyl panel: the edge of the vinyl piece will align with the folded back raw edge of the body.

  • Sew the clear insert to the MAIN BODY piece first using topstitch 1/16” from the fabric/vinyl edge. Then sew the top & bottom to the lining, flip right-side-out, and iron flat (note that the body rolls over to the lining on the top and bottom edges).

  • It’s easiest to sew with the machine foot on the interior side because of the natural cupped shape of the mask.

  • Do not puncture the vinyl where it is not covered by fabric.

Reversible Full Cloth Masks

  • Use a fun fabric on one side and a serious fabric on the other, or different colors, so that you have a mask for every occasion, mood, and outfit!

  • Add interfacing/extra layers as needed.

  • These can be made to open and hold a filter by clean-finishing all raw edges and leaving the strap sides open to create a pocket. Finish the sides with 1/4”-1/4” fold, then insert the strap to secure while topstitching along the top and bottom edges of the mask.

    Adding A Pocket

  • You will need the Pocket Placket pattern.

  • The edges of all pieces must be clean-finished. If you do not have a serger, zig zag and/or fabric tack the raw edges.

  • On the placket, the longer curved edge aligns with the Cloth Mask pattern at center seam. On the opposite edge, turn in 1/4” and top stitch to hide the serged/clean-finished edge. Alternatively, you can cut out an extra placket piece and self-face for clean edge.

  • One side of the mask will be two Cloth Mask pieces sewn together at the center seam. The other side of the mask will be 1 Cloth Mask piece with the Pocket Placket sewn, and 1 standalone Cloth Mask piece. You will also have to turn in 1/4” and top stitch the center seam side of the standalone piece.

  • When all pieces are ready to sew into one mask, with INNER side OUT, the center seam of the Mask+Placket piece will align with the center seam of the two Cloth Mask pieces sewn together. Then finished curved edge of the standalone Cloth Mask piece aligns at the centerline of the Placket piece. So you will be sandwiching the placket between the full cloth piece and the standalone piece to sew.
